Free Press Features UVM Engineering Research to Create More Permeable Pavement, Reducing Water Runoff
- By University Communications
Mandar Dewoolkar, associate professor of engineering, and his research team explain their work to the Burlington Free Press -- an effort to create a permeable concrete surface that helps prevent erosion and water pollution by absorbing rainwater. With a stretch of Trinity Campus parking lot as their lab, the team used an innovative, modular design of pre-cast and cured concrete slabs installed on a bed of gravel, with embedded gauges to monitor changes in the concrete’s permeability, fluctuations in the water table and salinity.
