Commercial whaling has been illegal since 1986, but in his op-ed in the Los Angeles Times, Frank Zelco, associate professor of environmental history, explains that hundreds of whales are killed annually by the Japanese for scientific research, a practice which is legal, as is the selling of the meat from these whales. Arguing against this practice, Zelco says that, ethics aside, the continuation of whaling “makes no sense from an economic, political, ecological or cultural perspective.” Read the piece...
