Alan Tinkler, assistant professor in the College of Education and Social Services, was given the Engaged Partnership award at the Vermont Campus Compact annual ceremony for his work with the King Street Youth Center.

The award recognizes meaningful collaborations between campus and community entities (nonprofits, educational institutions, businesses, etc.) that serve as a model for potential campus-community engagement.

“I have long been an advocate of service-learning because of the power of collaboration with community partners, so it’s an honor for Gabe Stouse (volunteer coordinator, King Street Center) and I to receive the Engaged Partnership Award on behalf King Street Center and UVM’s Department of Education,” Tinkler says. “The award is especially gratifying because it recognizes the collaborative work that we’ve done together over the last five years to advance opportunities for King Street youth and education students at the University of Vermont.”

Junior Jorden Redell was given the Engaged Student award for her work to facilitate student relationships with the local community around the issue of student housing in residential areas. Engaged students are those who demonstrate a significant investment of time and energy into activities that promote and support engagement at their institution and among their peers.

These honors follow an honorable mention award issued by the International Center for Service-Learning in Teacher Education to UVM's Department of Education for its service-learning work.
