As part of their series, “Vermont Reads: The Sound and Feel of Poetry,” VPR talks to Major Jackson, poet and professor of English, about his early introduction and appreciation for poetry and listens in on one of his poetry workshops with students as they share and discuss each other’s work. “We are not encouraged to be thoughtful with language and to think about the implications and the effects of the language that we use,” Jackson says of our culture, even as he believes that students more than anyone would be served by slowing down and experiencing the deep reflection that poetry offers.
