Daniel H. Krymkowski, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of sociology, will speak Thursday, March 21, at 4 p.m. in Waterman Building's Memorial Lounge. His lecture, "Data Analysis Without Theory Is Not Science," is part of the College of Arts and Sciences Full Professor Lecture Series.

Professor Krymkowski will critique modern examples of "abstracted empiricism" -- a phrase coined by C. Wright Mills to describe research in the social sciences that fails to address important theoretical issues. Krymkowski will discuss how social scientific investigations should be conducted and provide an illustration of such research from his current work on ethnic and racial differences in outdoor recreation.

This lecture, free and open to the public, will be non-technical and accessible to all colleagues and students.

A recording of the lecture will be made available soon on the college's online media blog and eventually on the College of Arts and Sciences website.
