Katrien Pype, a post-doc in the Program in Science, Technology, and Society at MIT will speak on "Cellular Fantasies:  Mobile Phone Practices and Imaginations in Contemporary Kinshasa," Wednesday, Nov. 7 at 4 p.m. in John Dewey Lounge, Old Mil.

Pype, who earned her doctorate in social and cultural anthropology, has written and published on a variety of topics related to Kinsahasa's popular culture, including television function, martial arts and dance. In 2009 and again in 2011, she was a Newton International Fellow at the Centre of West African Studies, University of Birmingham (UK), where she worked on a postdoctoral project that examined the interfaces of memory, media and politics in Kinshasa’s early democracy.

Free and open to the public, her lecture is sponsored by he Department of Religion and the African Studies Program.
