In a collaboration with the Department of Music that brings fresh life into an ancient tale, the UVM Department of Theatre continues its 2012/2013 season with The Arabian Nights, running from Thursday, Nov. 1 through Sunday, Nov. 11. Associate Professor Sarah Carleton directs Mary Zimmerman’s acclaimed adaptation of A Thousand and One Nights, incorporating dance and music into a production that reminds us of eternally relevant human themes.

The Arabian Nights tells the story of legendary Persian queen Scheherazade as she uses her wiles and imagination to fill a thousand and one nights with exotic tales of love, lust, hilarity and sorrow in order to delay her murder and avoid the fate that has befallen all that have preceded her.

Adding richness, depth and cultural authenticity to the storytelling will be music composed for the production by Patricia Julien, associate professor of music, who drew on her background that includes touring with a Middle Eastern jazz band.

Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m., Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 1 through Nov. 3 and Nov. 8 through Nov. 10. Matinee performances start at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3 and Sunday, Nov. 11. The box office is open two hours prior to the start of the performance.

Tickets for The Arabian Nights (and all main stage productions including The Toys Take Over Christmas) are available now at the Royall Tyler box office (802-656-2094) or online. Ticket prices run from $7 for UVM students; $15 for UVM faculty and staff, non-UVM students and seniors (55+); and $18 for other adults. The box office is located on the main floor of the Royall Tyler Theatre at 116 University Place. Regular box office hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
