The results of a new study led by Austin Troy, associate professor in the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources, and first published in the journal Landscape and Urban Planning, is featured in The Atlantic, among other major media outlets. The research, for which Troy and his colleagues ran models to analyze the relationship between tree canopy and crime in Baltimore -- controlling for factors known to influence crime statistics such as income, race and population density -- showed that a 10 percent increase in tree canopy was associated with a roughly 12 percent decrease in crime.
