Five students at UVM have been awarded scholarships by United Academics, UVM’s faculty union. The recipients, including students from Vergennes, Bennington, and Burlington, were recognized for their dedication to social and economic justice as well as academic achievement. Senior history major Thomas Charbonneau received the 2012 Linda Backus Memorial Scholarship. Jeffrey Brace Book Awards went to Larkin Snow Coffey, a sophomore history major from Raleigh, N.C.; Ian Hulbert, a first-year student from Bennington, Vt., majoring in French and biochemistry and studying pre-medicine; Indigo Martin James, an Honors College sophomore women’s and gender studies and English double major from Denmark, Maine; and Arline O’Leary Weaver, a sophomore elementary education major from Burlington.

Patrick Clemins, Vermont EPSCoR cyber education specialist, was a panelist at the Spring 2012 Internet2 Member Meeting in Arlington, Virg., April 24th, 2012. The panel, “Expanding the Research Horizons and Impact of Less Research Intensive Institutions," focused on efforts by the Internet2 community to include educational institutions outside of research universities, including undergraduate colleges, community colleges, K-12 schools, libraries, museums and education-based associations. Clemins outlined the efforts of Vermont EPSCoR and UVM to establish a Vermont Internet2 Sponsored Educational Group Participant (SEGP) network and the other aspects of his work.

The Alzheimer’s Association, Vermont Chapter will recognize the distinguished work of Dr. William Pendlebury, professor of pathology, neurology and medicine, and the Memory Center at Fletcher Allen Health Care with the Community Activist and Leadership Award at the 2012 Reason to Hope Dinner, June 12. Pendlebury co-founded The Memory Center at Fletcher Allen Health Care in 1991 and is also the director of the UVM Center on Aging. His research for the past 30 years has been focused on basic and clinical aspects of Alzheimer’s disease, including pharmacologic treatment strategies.

Physical Plant and Risk Management were recognized by the university's property insurance carrier FM Global with an award that is titled "Significant Improvement Award" for facilities. The award is given to facilities that have reduced the overall risk to the buildings and properties over the course of time with strategies, investment and programs. Only one percent of the  facilities insured by FM Global, which is a world-wide company, receive the award.
