Awards and Honors
UVM's Adaptive Sports, in partnership with Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports, will receive a $10,000 grant from Newman's Own Foundation. The award was announced during the America East Basketball Championship, where Newman's Own Foundation unveiled the top grant recipients of its third-annual Campus Community Service Challenge.
Heather Bean, a post-doctoral associate working with professor of engineering Jane Hill, has been named the Carol Basbaum Memorial Research Fellow by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. This award is given to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Research Fellowship applicant who receives the highest score during the foundation’s review of research proposals. Her proposal, "Volatile biomarkers of P. aeruginosa adaptation to the CF lung", focuses on identifying volatile chemical compounds that are produced by the bacterium P. aeruginosa as it mutates and adapts in chronic cystic fibrosis lung infections.
Kathy Fox, associate professor of sociology, was awarded a Fulbright to travel to New Zealand during the Spring semester of 2013. She'll be conducting a comparative study of New Zealand's and Vermont's restorative justice programs.
Burton Wilcke, professor and chair of medical laboratory and radiation sciences, has been appointed to serve on the newly-created Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). The PHAB, which was established by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is charged with accrediting state, territorial, tribal and local public health departments, a process which has never been done before. The first PHAB meeting will take place in April 2012.
Publications and Presentations
A research poster produced by Claire Freson, a fourth-year Exercise and Movement Science major, was accepted for presentation at the 9th Annual Meeting and 3rd World Congress on Exercise is Medicine of the American College of Sports Medicine in San Francisco from May 29 to June 2. Her abstract, titled "Improving Exercise Adherence Through Online Journaling Following Physical Therapy Treatment for Chronic Low Back Pain," was supported by a URECA! grant, which will also fund her travel to the meeting. Following the meeting, her abstract will be published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Volume 44:5 Supplement. Freson works with Sharon Henry, professor of rehabilitation and movement sciences, in the Human Motion Analysis Lab.
A publication by senior Benjamin Vaughan, postdocotral researcher Tony Wetherby and assistant professor of chemistry Rory Waterman elucidating the molecular structure of unique zinc bis( beta-diketiminate) complex appeared in the journal Acta Crystallographica Section E. The work was partly supported by an Arts and Sciences APEL grant to Vaughan. Waterman completed a lecture tour in southern California at the end of February including visits to the University of San Diego, University of California San Diego, Caltech, and University of Southern California.
