Lane Perry from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand will deliver a public lecture, "Shaken and Stirred (into Action): Insights from an Epicenter of Human Spirit, Community Engagement, and Leadership" Thursday, Feb. 23 at noon in Marsh Lounge, Billings.

After the catastrophic earthquake of Sept 2010 in Christchurch, New Zealand, students from the University of Canterbury mobilized to offer support and relief to the community. To give students an opportunity to reflect on their service and connect it to academic content, Perry helped create a course, "Rebuilding Christchurch -- An Introduction to Community Engagement in Tertiary Studies."

Perry's lecture at UVM is hosted by the Office of Community-University Partnerships and Service Learning, which, drawing lessons from Canterbury, helped design a course for UVM students in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene's devastation in Vermont.
