On Aug. 28, the most academically talented class in UVM history arrived on campus, and the entire community joined together to welcome them. As faculty, staff and fellow students hefted boxes and bags to rooms, alumni from around the world shared their advice for the new students. All together, the UVM family donated more than $80,000 as part of the #MoveUVM Giving Day Challenge, unlocking an additional $100,000 toward student scholarships.

Deborah Brown and her son Nathaniel wait for Harris/Millis to open. Deborah's son Colin is an upperclassman at UVM and Nathaniel is her youngest, so she'll have an empty nest at the end of the day. "Oh, I know I'll cry. I already have," she says.

Converse Hall. 2:30 p.m.

Zach Pick

First-year Zach Pick, from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, is a trained and certified ski patroller who spent last ski season patrolling at Breckinridge. Zach has seen it all, including a skier with a broken femur on his first day on the job he and his dad, also a ski patroller, had to baby down the mountain pulling traction on the man’s leg to keep it from slicing his femoral artery. Smuggler’s Notch is tentatively holding a spot for him, but Zach will wait for his sophomore year to start ski patrolling. Year one is all about getting his feet on terra firma at UVM as he starts a challenging major in mechanical engineering.

Nadel playing guitar

For first-year Graham Nadel, classic rock is where it’s at. “I used to play drums,” he says, “but now I play guitar.” Nadel, from Wellesley, Massachusetts, sounds good.
