Biography:A distinguished scholar of the languages, culture and history of the classical era in Greek and Rome, Ambrose is a former Lyman-Roberts Chair in Classical Languages and Literature. He has published in the field of Greek drama and Greek and Latin epic and the Classical tradition. He initiated UVM's annual Latin Day in 1976, a popular event that draws high school and middle school students throughout Vermont to the university for a competition and celebration of Greek and Roman culture. Ambrose earned a bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at Princeton University with additional graduate work at the University of Vienna. He is a musician and expert on the music of composer John Sebastian Bach. His translations of the complete vocal texts of Bach are online at
