| Biography: | Borchert, an expert in religious studies, specializes in religion and politics in contemporary Asia, focusing on Buddhism in Southeast Asia, religion in China, and religious education. Currently, he is writing a book on the education of Buddhist monks within Chinese minority communities which is based on eighteen months of fieldwork in Southwest China between 2000 and 2007. He is also beginning a project focused on Buddhism and national identity among monks and nuns in China and Thailand. He has published articles in the Journal of Asian Studies, the Journal of the International Association of Buddhists Studies on monastic education and modernity in China, and Religion Compass on Buddhism and nationalism in the twentieth century.
