Biography:Dempsey's research interests include the relationship between analyst attention concentration and stock market pricing efficiency with respect to earnings announcements, a subject on which he has made several paper presentations at seminars and conferences. Other research interests include financial performance measurement and corporate dividend policy. His research has been published in The Journal of Financial Statement Analysis, the Quarterly Journal of Business and Economics, the Journal of Business Finance and Accounting, the Journal of Financial Research, and The Accounting Review. The recipient of a numerous academic honors and teaching awards, he has done extensive consulting work for several national and regional firms, including General Dynamics and IBM. Dempsey serves as a financial consultant for local and national organizations. Recent work involves a major study commissioned by the U.S. Postal Service to convert post offices from cost centers to profit centers. The model he developed is being implemented nationally, and will serve as the primary performance evaluation system for the U.S. Postal Service. Before joining UVM, Dempsey taught at Virginia Tech (1982-85) and The College of William and Mary. At UVM, his primary teaching interests are in financial and managerial accounting, with an emphasis on business valuation issues.
