Biography:Huck Gutman's teaching and scholarship encompass modern and contemporary poetry, with emphasis on Whitman, Dickinson, Williams, Stevens, and poems in translation. He is a columnist on political and international affairs for THE STATESMAN, the leading English newspaper in eastern India, and a regular contributor to the editorial page of DAWN, Pakistan's most widely circulated English language newspaper. [For subjects Gutman has addressed, see http://www.uvm.edu/%7esgutman/Statesman_Commentary_Page.html] He has published scholarly articles and essays on failed banks and federal policy, Ben Franklin, Walt Whitman, politics and lyric poetry, art and the Black community, John Dos Passos, and other subjects. He also serves as senior aide to U.S. Rep. (VT) Bernie Sanders. He has received Fulbright Grants to teach and conduct research in India and Lisbon; was organizer of a 14-nation conference on American literature, and a U.S. Information Agency Visiting Speaker in Egypt, Lithuania, Tunisia, and India. His books include: "Outsider in the House" (with Bernard Sanders), "As Others Read Us: International Perspectives on American Literature," "Technolgies of the Self: A Seminar with Michel Foucault," and "Mankind in Barbary: The Individual and Society in the Novels of Norman Mailer".
