Biography:Major Jackson earned degrees from Temple University and University of Oregon. His first collection of poetry, "Leaving Saturn," was recently nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award. A member of the Dark Room Collective, his poems have appeared in the American Poetry Review, Boulevard, Callaloo, and The New Yorker, among other journals. His poetry also appears in several anthologies. Jackson is one of two U.S. poets to receive a Library of Congress Witter Bynner Fellowship in 2003; he also has received fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, Cave Canem, The MacDowell Colony, Pew Fellowship in the Arts and Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown. Formerly the Literary Arts Curator of the Painted Bride Art Center in Philadelphia, Jackson was an assistant professor of English at Xavier University of Louisiana and a member of the low-residency MFA Creative Writing Program at Queens College in Charlotte, N.C. before joining UVM in 2002.
