Biography:Gause is director of UVM's Middle East Studies Program and teaches in the political science department. His teaching and research interests are in Middle Eastern politics and international relations, with a particular interest in the politics of the Arabian Peninsula and Gulf area. Often in demand with media for his expertise on the Middle East, he travels in the region regularly. He is the author of a number of articles and two books, "Oil Monarchies: Domestic and Security Challenges in the Arab Gulf States" (1994) and "Saudi-Yemini Relations: Domestic Structures and Foreign Influence" (1990). He earned his Ph.D. at Harvard in 1987, and studied Arabic at the American University in Cairo and Middlebury College. Before coming to Vermont, he was on the faculty of Columbia University. In 1994-95 he was Fellow for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.
