Specialty:civic engagement, nonprofit community organizations, social movements, lobbying
Biography:Walker’s research focuses on how citizens seek to influence institutional policies, as well as how institutions either encourage or restrict citizens from doing so. His current research projects explore these questions by examining: (1)how institutional characteristics shape the tactics used by protest groups, (2) how corporations, interest groups, and government agencies subsidize public political participation through grassroots lobbying, (3) how local community groups build participation and civic skills in low-income communities, and (4) the professionalization of membership organizations. He teaches courses on social movements, the nonprofit and voluntary sector, and sociological theory. His work has appeared in journals including Sociological Forum, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, and Public Opinion Quarterly; a recent manuscript will appear in the American Journal of Sociology.
