Biography:Eleanor M. Miller has been Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for almost three years. She came to UVM from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where she was a faculty member for 25 years and served as chair of sociology, director of women's studies, associate chancellor for equal opportunity, and social science dean in the College of Letters and Science. She received her Ph.D. in 1984 in sociology from the University of Chicago. Her research specialties include deviant behavior, social theory and history, qualitative research methods and gender. She is the author of the books “Street Women” and “The Worth of Women’s Work,” as well as articles on women and crime and the work of Georg Simmel, a founder of sociology as adiscipline. She has served as president of Sociologists for Women in Society and the Midwest Sociological Association and chair of the American Sociological Associates committee on Academic Freeman and the committee on Professional Ethics and was one of the founding editors of “Gender and Society.”
