Biography:Fothergill, a disaster sociologist, specializes in the areas of family, gender, inequality, disasters, and qualitative methodology. Currently, her research projects include a study of children's experiences in Hurricane Katrina, an analysis of volunteerism after the September 11 terrorist attacks, and a study of academics' strategies to balance work and family demands. She teaches courses on marriage and the family, the sociology of disasters, and the sociology of childhood. Her book, "Heads Above Water: Gender, Class, and Family in the Grand Forks Flood," (SUNY Press 2004) is based on ethnographic research done in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and examines women's experiences in a large-scale disaster.
