Final: Maine 1, Vermont 0 | Box Score
ORONO, Maine - Marie-Andree Canuel converted a penalty kick in the 58th minute and the Maine Black Bears were able to hang on for a 1-0 victory over visiting Vermont in an America East women's soccer match on Thursday afternoon. "The effort was there today from the team," said Vermont head coach Kerry Dziczkaniec. "We had some good scoring opportunities we just ran out of time. Our defense did an excellent job of slowing Maine down, but we could not capitalize on our chances." After a scoreless first half, a Black Bear attacking player collided with Vermont goalkeeper Eliza Bradley (Charlotte, Vt.) in a challenge and the referee awarded Maine a penalty kick. Canuel stepped up and finished off the opportunity for her third goal of the season. The Black Bears out shot Vermont 15-9 in the match. Bradley was credited with six saves, while Jasmine Phillips made two stops in the Maine net to pick up her ninth shutout of the year. Vermont closes out the regular season at Stony Brook on Sunday (Oct. 22) in a game that has playoff implications for both teams. Kick-off is slated for 12:00pm and fans can watch the action via live stats on their computers.
