WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Carlo Cudini's goal off a corner kick in the 79th minute gave Hartford a 1-0 win over Vermont in America East men's soccer at Al Marzook Field Wednesday evening. The Catamounts (8-4-0, 1-2-0 America East) came into the game ranked 23rd in the nation and first in New England but were frustrated by the defensive effort by the Hawks (4-5-2, 1-1-1), one of the region's most improved teams. UVM outshot Hartford, 13-6, including a 9-2 margin in the first half. "We worked hard but could not find a goal," said Vermont head coach Jesse Cormier. "With our success, and the high rankings we have been given, we play with a big bullseye on our backs. Every game in this conference is a battle and give Hartford credit for their defensive style." Vermont had three straight excellent scoring opportunities in a two-minute span in the first half. The first was a 20-yard blast just off the mark by Danny Broughan (Asbourne, Ireland) and the next attempt came after a foul on Hartford keeper Ryan Carr (six saves) as Jordan Crasilneck (Eugene, Ore.) had his shot deflect off the cross bar. With 23:30 to play in the first half, Broughan again blasted a high drive that Carr made a leaping punch save to keep the game scoreless. But Hartford cashed in on its best chance as Cudini headed in a corner kick by Costa Kyritsis with just under 12 minutes left in regulation for the game's only goal. It is the first time Vermont has been shutout in 12 games this season and it is the first blanking of UVM over its last 17 games dating back to October 13, 2004. Tom Critz (Enfield, Conn.) made two saves, one in each half, for the Catamounts. Vermont returns home to host UMBC on Saturday at 1:00pm, part of UVM's Homecoming and Family Weekend. Starting at 11:30am prior to the game there will be a tailgate party at Centennial Field featuring a live band and free food compliments of Nectar's and The Bagel. UVM students with a valid ID and Victory Club members are admitted free to all Catamount regular season home soccer games.
