BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Miguel Magrass (West Roxbury, Mass.) of the University of Vermont was named America East Baseball Player of the Week, the conference office announced today. Magrass was tremendous at the plate last week as the Catamounts (26-17, 14-7 America East) went 3-1 and swept a three-game series with Albany to wrap up the regular season. In four games he hit .455 (7-for-16) with a double, a triple, a homer, three stolen bases and eight runs batted in. He came through in the clutch in the three wins over the Great Danes hitting .500 (6-for-12) with five RBI. The sophomore third baseman had a two-out, game-ending two-run single in UVM's 3-2 win over Albany in the nightcap on Friday, a victory that clinched a spot in the 2005 America East Baseball Championship. In the bottom of the ninth on Saturday, Magrass doubled and scored the game-winning run on a two-out single by Kyle Brault (Milton, Vt.) in the Cats' 6-5 win that gave them a share of second place in the final conference standings. The 2004 America East Rookie of the Year, Magrass has continued to be one of Vermont's top hitters as it heads to the postseason. Second with a .348 batting average, he leads the team with 34 RBI and 20 extra-base hits while his five triples are the second-most in a single season at UVM. The Catamounts will be making their third appearance in the last four seasons to the America East Baseball Championship and their seventh overall since the current double-elimination format began in 1995. The four-team conference championship begins Thursday at UVM's Centennial Field when top-seeded Northeastern (25-21, 14-6) takes on #4 Binghamton (23-24, 12-8) at 3:30pm. Vermont, the third seed, will play second-seeded Maine (31-16, 14-7) in a first round game Thursday at 7:00pm. The tournament will run through Saturday with the conference champion earning a bid to the NCAA Baseball Championship. For ticket information, call the UVM Athletic Ticket Office at 1-866-4CAT-TIX.
