LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - The University of Vermont ski team got a first-place finish from junior captain Ethan Foster (Weston, Vt.) in the men's 20-kilometer classical race but it wasn't enough to overtake Middlebury, which won its second straight carnival by 21.5 points over the second-place Catamounts. Foster won the 20-K mass-start race by more than a minute, finishing in 1:01:29.8 Jordi St. John (South Londonderry, Vt.) was ninth in 1:04:04.3. In the women's 15-K race, Kate Crawford (Hawley, Mass.) and Emily Klemp (Laurium, Mich.) each posted top-10 finishes, with Crawford placing sixth (55:45.7) and Klemp eighth (57:02.1). Carina Hamel (Southampton, Mass.) was 13th and newcomer Martine Haug (Olso, Norway) was 14th. On the alpine side, Jamie Kingsbury (Waitsfield, Vt.) was third in the women's slalom, with Hilary McCloy (Bethel, Maine) taking fifth and Erin Mascolino (Jeffersonville, Vt.) eighth. In the men's slalom event, Paul Epstein (Carlisle, Mass.) was 13th, Matt Knittle (Stowe, Vt.) was 14th and Tyler Hughes (Killington, Vt.) finished 15th. Vermont finished second with 540 points. Middlebury won with 561.5 points, while Dartmouth was third with 519.5 points. The Catamounts host the UVM Carnival next Friday and Saturday at Stowe Mountain Resort and Trapp Family Lodge.
