Seventeen Vermont children with disabilities hope to have their wishes filled for specially fitted tricycles called Amtrykes through a morning of Zumba instruction sponsored by the Vermont Chapter of AMBUCS, a national organization promoting independence and mobility for people with disabilities. The fundraising event, coordinated by the UVM Center on Disability and Community Inclusion, will feature Zumba instructors from across the state.
Zumba is an aerobic fitness program based on a mix of different dance styles, particularly Latin and international dance. The dance focuses on using interval training — alternating between high and low intensity — to work out various parts of your body. Instruction takes place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., followed by snacks and prizes awarded until noon. A group photo will be taken halfway through Zumba instruction.
Higher Ground in South Burlington will hold the event on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 7. Registrants will be able to sign-in from 9 to 9:25 a.m. Participation requires collecting a minimum of $60 in donations or paying a fee of $25. A printable sponsor sheet for collecting donations will be sent to participants' e-mails after registering for the event online. The fee can be payed online or at the door. Pre-registration is available online.
Money raised will go towards purchasing Amtrykes for the seventeen disabled children on the Vermont AMBUCS waitlist. Amtrykes are tricycles designed to be adaptable to kids with varying disabilities and of varying ages in order to increase mobility and independence.
