The student-led UVM Clean Energy Group, a club of the Student Government Association, worked for two years to gather support for their vision: run the University of Vermont efficiently on a fraction of its current energy use, with clean, renewable energy technologies that support the local economy. In May 2008 the UVM Board of Trustees approved the creation of the Clean Energy Fund with a $10 per semester student fee (part of the comprehensive fee that UVM collects each semester from full-time students) to fund UVM campus projects dedicated to clean energy.
Now the Clean Energy Fund Committee and the UVM Office of Sustainability, which supports the fund, are pleased to announce a request for proposals. This presents an opportunity for members of the UVM community to engage in campus renewable energy projects that support the students' vision.
The CEF can be used for projects in two categories. Projects in the research, demonstration and development category will directly involve the energy-related operations of the university through addressing clean energy consumption, production, or both. Examples of research, demonstration and development projects include upgrading existing wind turbine or solar photovoltaic power monitoring systems, or installing and using renewable energy technologies in campus buildings. Projects in the education category will focus on educational programs, content, and/or processes at the university. Examples of education projects include development of clean energy-related courses or seminars at UVM.
