Visiting Scholar Wang Yinghong shares history, music and dance with students at Bethel Elementary School

Between February 1 and the end of May, Visiting Scholar Wang Yinghong will have visited 11 schools in Vermont, sharing her culture with hundreds of students. From Barnard Elementary school for a week to Bethel Elementary School for a day, the curriculum Yinghong shares depends on the age level and grades of the students. At a recent visit to Bethel Elementary School, the primary focus was on traditional songs, dances and the making of paper dragon puppets.

“I feel like I returned to my childhood,” explained Yinghong, referring to all the traditional arts and crafts projects she has been sharing with Vermont elementary age students. In her classes in China, the Visiting Scholar teaches high school students English and Chinese. The art projects have been a fun way to share and remember a culture. “It’s so nice to be spend a day with them".

While her schedule changes week to week, Yinghong continues to host a Mandarin Class in Randolph Union High School every Thursday. After April break, Yinghong looks forward to a week at Barre City School.
