Montpelier--On April 24 Vermont youths will observe government in action and, through invited speakers, group activities and discussions, learn how they can take a stand on some of the same issues facing legislators today.

The Montpelier-based event, Raise Your Voice--Day at the Capitol 2012, is sponsored by University of Vermont (UVM) Extension 4-H and open to all youths, seventh grade and older. Enrollment in 4-H is not required to participate, just an interest in civic engagement. Parents and 4-H club leaders also are welcome to attend.

Headquarters for the event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., will be the Capitol Plaza Hotel and Conference Center on State Street although participants also will tour the Vermont State House. Gov. Peter Shumlin will provide opening remarks followed by a panel on the importance of speaking out on the issues.

Speakers include Matt Dunne, former Vermont legislator and gubernatorial candidate; Phil Fiermonte, outreach director for U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders; Daniel Goodrow, a youth with Down syndrome who advocates for the Special Olympics; and teen members from Essex CHIPS (Community Helping Inspire People to Succeed) who are involved with Above the Influence, a campaign to promote healthy lifestyles among teens and substance-free events.

Space is limited to 40 participants. The deadline to register is April 13. The fee is $15 per person and includes lunch, snacks and parking.

A nominal processing fee will be added to online registrations. To register, go to www.uvm.edu/extension/4-Hevents and click on "Raise Your Voice--Day at the Capitol 2012." Prior to the event, all registrants will receive a letter with program details, a parking permit and information on where to park.

Anyone requiring a disability-related accommodation to participate should contact Lauren Traister, UVM Extension 4-H teen and leadership program coordinator, at (802) 888-4972, ext. 402, or toll-free at (866) 260-5603, ext. 402, no later than April 13.
