Martin Luther King III to Highlight Week of Celebration at UVM

Human rights advocate and community activist Martin Luther King III will headline a multi-day celebration honoring the life and legacy of his father, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 4 p.m. in Patrick Gymnasium. The afternoon will include a special guest performance by the Burlington Ecumenical Gospel Choir.

This event is free and open to the public but does require tickets, which will be made available according to the following schedule: From now forward tickets will be available to UVM students, faculty, and staff (one ticket for each UVM ID). Saturday, Jan. 17 tickets are open to the general public with a limit of two per person. Tickets can be picked up at the Hoffman information desk in the Davis Center (802) 656-4636. From 1 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, free tickets will also be available at the Patrick Gymnasium lobby.

Monday, Jan 19

  • MLK Day — Make it "A Day On" by volunteering in and around Burlington with the Community Economic Development Office (CEDO) and their A*VISTA team.

Tuesday, Jan. 20

  • Viewing of the 44th Presidential Inauguration Swearing-in Ceremony.
    11 a.m., Grand Maple Ballroom, Davis Center.
  • MLK Birthday Celebration.
    Immediately following inaugural ceremony, Livak Fireplace Lounge.
  • "The Many Faces of Eve: Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin," a discussion of gender and race in politics.
    3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Grand Maple Ballroom, Davis Center.

Wednesday, Jan. 21

  • Community Connections: Stop by to Sign-up for a Day of Service.
    10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Davis Center atrium, Given/Rowell atrium or Waterman Building (at the College St. entrance).
  • "Words that Changed a Nation: A Presidential Reading Hour" featuring an inside look at MLK papers.
    12 p.m. to 1 p.m., Grand Maple Ballroom, Davis Center.
  • "Race, Social Justice and Medicine," hosted by the College of Medicine.
    5 p.m. to 6 p.m., presentation, Carpenter Auditorium, Given E131.
    6 p.m. to 7 p.m., reception, Hoehl Gallery, Given.

Thursday, Jan. 22

  • Martin Luther King III Speech. Special guest performance by the Burlington Ecumenical Gospel Choir.

  • Center for Cultural Pluralism's 10th Anniversary Celebration Reception and Slideshow.
