A week of hunger and homelessness education, awareness, and service action will begin on Sunday, Nov. 16 at the University of Vermont and at 500 campuses across the country.

The week begins with the Empty Bowls Dinner and the Food Stamp Challenge Kick-Off. Over the next four days, students will host a Hunger Banquet, Tri-College Mini-COTS Walk, the annual Box City Homelessness Sleep-Out, Campus Kitchens Project Launch, a Fill the Fireplace Food Drive, and Food Stamp Challenge Wrap Up. See the full schedule of events on the Hunger and Homelessness Week website.

The week's events were organized during the fall semester by students in Professor Jackie Weinstock's human development and family studies introductory service-learning class and by members of Community Service Programs. In teams, they studied the hidden realities and artificial causes of poverty in America and decided how they wanted to raise awareness and promote change across campus. "It's been amazing to see how students with little initial awareness of these issues have risen to the task of educating themselves and now the wider community," says Lluvia Mulvaney-Stanak, assistant director of community service programs.

Information: Sarah Heim or Kailee Brickner-McDonald, 656-2060.
