The University of Vermont expects a record turnout for its annual Homecoming and Family Weekend, Thursday-Sunday, October 4-7, 2007. About 3,000 alumni, parents, and family members will participate in a variety of events happening on campus and around the greater Burlington area over the course of the weekend.

Except as noted below, a $30 per family registration fee covers admission to most of the weekend's events and includes a button that entitles the wearer to special discounts and giveaways at various locations in and around Burlington, admission to open classes on Thursday and Friday, and complimentary admission to the Fleming Museum all weekend.

Featured Event

• Dudley H. Davis Center Dedication—Friday, October 5, 3:00-3:30 p.m., Davis Center Oval (Rain site - Olin Atrium in the Davis Center)
The entire UVM and surrounding communities are invited to attend the ceremonial opening of the Dudley H. Davis Center, the spectacular new "front door" to campus. Named for the late Dudley H. Davis '43, a towering figure in the Vermont business community, the Davis Center is the realization of a longstanding need for a gathering place for the UVM community.

All Weekend

• Visit the brand new Growing Vermont student-operated Vermont products store on the first floor of the Dudley H. Davis Center, a not-for-profit, one-of-a-kind retail shop dedicated to showcasing Vermont businesses and their products on campus, educating consumers about the benefits of buying local, and providing experiential learning opportunities for UVM’s aspiring entrepreneurs. Open Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

• Robert Hull Fleming Museum
The Fleming Museum presents Material Pursuits, a major exhibition exploring how contemporary American artists are using methods, materials, and strategies usually associated with craft to create large-format artwork with a conceptual perspective. The exhibition features an array of media and working methods, including paper, pipe cleaners, Sculpey, mosaics, crocheting, quilting, embroidery, and flocking. In the Wolcott Gallery is an exhibition of 19th- and early 20th-century travel photography from the Museum's collection. In the Wilbur Room is Shoes!, a selection of footwear from a range of world cultures drawn from the Fleming Museum's costume collection. Visit www.flemingmuseum.org for more information. • Bailey/Howe Library
Bailey/Howe Library is hosting an exhibition on the history of science instruction and research using photographs, historic documents, and artifacts from Special Collections, the University Archives, and other departments. Learn about over 200 years of science education at UVM.

Thursday, October 4

• Open Classrooms—All Day
Experience the best UVM has to offer. Parents, families, and alumni are invited to sample academic life at UVM by attending selected classes. Class listings available at Registration Headquarters in the Dudley H. Davis Center.

Registration is the place for all parents, families, alumni, and University volunteers to pick up tickets, find out what's going on in the area, and ask any questions.

• Homecoming Concert - UVM Department of Music—7:30 p.m., Davis Center, Grand Maple Ballroom
Featuring the University ensembles in a Gala Homecoming Concert.

• Found a Peanut—7:30 p.m., Royall Tyler Theatre
The UVM Theatre Department opens its 2007-2008 season with the Donald Margulies play, Found a Peanut, directed by Gregory Ramos. Additional performances Friday, October 5 and Saturday, October 6 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 7 at 2 p.m. Contact the UVM Theatre Box Office at 802-656-2094 for ticket availability. Registration is the place for all parents, families, alumni, and University volunteers to pick up tickets, find out what’s going on in the area, and ask any questions.

• Eighth Annual UVM Fall Foliage Golf Classic—9:00 a.m.– 3:00 p.m., Vermont National Country Club
Enjoy a fun day of golf with alumni, staff, athletes, families and friends to support the Victory Club. Cost: $200* for individuals ($50 tax deduction); $750* for a foursome ($200 tax deduction); $300 for tee sponsorship; $900* for tee sponsorship and foursome ($400 tax deduction). -Todd Pritchard, Professor of Nutrition and Food Sciences. Photography is one of his many hobbies (11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.).
-Bernd Heinrich, Professor Emeritus, is the author of a number of books about nature writing, behavior, biology, ecology, and evolution (noon-1:00 p.m.).
-Alex Stewart, Associate Professor of Music and author of Making the Scene: Contemporary New York City Big Band Jazz, an in-depth look at big band jazz in contemporary New York City (noon-1:00 p.m.).
-Amy Huntington, Vermont illustrator and author of whimsical, country-themed picture books for children (noon-1:00 p.m.).
-Sylvia Parker, Senior lecturer of music. An active performing pianist who frequently plays solo programs (12:30-1:30 p.m.).
-David Huddle, Professor of English at UVM and the Bread Loaf School of English at Middlebury College. He is a multi-genre writer of poems, essays, and short stories (1:00-2:00 p.m.).
-Major Jackson, Associate Professor of English. Author of two collections of poetry - Hoops and Leaving Saturn (1:00-2:00 p.m.).
-Jeffrey Marshall, Associate Professor, archivist, and curator of manuscripts at UVM (1:00-2:00 p.m.).
-Mark Usher, Associate Professor of Classics. In addition to academic books and articles, he has written a children's picture book about Socrates - Wise Guy: The Life and Philosophy of Socrates (1:00-2:00 p.m.).
-Anthony Magistrale, Professor of English He has written several books about Stephen King and Edgar Allan Poe. His most recent book is Abject Terrors: Surveying the Modern and Postmodern Horror Film (3:00-4:00 p.m.).

Gregory Gause; David Marash, the new English-speaking anchor for Al Jazeera; and David Hamod, President of the National U.S.-Arab Chamber of Commerce. • World Wide Wiz: Become an Internet Expert—2:00-3:00 p.m., Bailey/Howe Library Instruction Center (main floor)
Do you sometimes find yourself spending hours on the Internet trying to find information? Would you like to know more about how to locate the best online resources? Learn how to maximize your research and get the most out of popular search tools such as Google. A member of the Bailey/Howe Library’s professional reference team will demonstrate tricks of the trade. Participants are invited to bring sample questions and research topics for investigation.

Explore Career Services, meet the career counselors, relax on our funky office furniture, or get a quick resume review (for students and alumni). Refreshments will be served.

Following the Davis Center Dedication, a time capsule that marks what it is like to be a student at UVM in the year 2007 will be sealed in place. A short ceremony followed by snacks and opportunities to talk with our student leaders.

• Lake Champlain Cruise—4:00 –5:30 p.m.
Take a scenic cruise aboard the Spirit of Ethan Allen III and learn a little more about the “greatest” lake. Tickets are required ($10 per person) and are non-refundable. A limited number of tickets may be available for purchase at Registration. Cruise leaves from the boathouse at the foot of College Street. Sponsored by the UVM Parents Council.

• 2nd Annual "Finding Unity In Our Diversity” Reception—4:00-6:00 p.m., Davis Center - Henderson's Café
Discover the history of UVM through a different perspective. Learn about the people and events that have contributed to our campus community. Event features the premiere of the newest panel additions to the "Remembering Our Past, Envisioning Our Future" project. Established in 2006, this project highlights ALANA and LGBTQA members and events from throughout history that have enhanced the discourse around diversity at UVM. Refreshments will be served.

• Shabbat Dinner—6:00 p.m., Waterman Manor
UVM Hillel cordially invites parents and their students to enjoy a Shabbat dinner and a short service. Watch for an announcement of our special guest for the evening. Tickets $22.50 per person.

• The UVM Lane Series presents Fred Hersch—7:30 p.m., UVM Recital Hall
Highly-acclaimed pianist and composer Fred Hersch has been widely recognized for his ability to reinvent the jazz piano repertoire. He has recorded more than two dozen albums as a solo artist standard jazz repertoire, infusing classics with his keen insight and extraordinary techniques. Nominated for Grammys for Best Instrumental Composition as well as for bandleader, he also was awarded a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship for composition in 2006 and a Rockefeller Fellowship for a composition residency at the Bellagio Center in Italy. • 15th Annual Kevin Roberson ’93 Memorial Run—9:00 a.m., Archie Post Field
Participants must register at Archie Post Field; the 5K run begins at 9:30 a.m. Registration fee of $10 benefits the Kevin Roberson Scholarship Fund.

• UVM Admissions Group Information Session and Campus Tour—9:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., Admissions Visitor Center, 184 South Prospect Street
Prior registration is required. RSVP at www.uvm.edu/admissions or by calling 802-656-3370. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your session. The information session and tour will last approximately 2½ hours.

The Soul Food Social, a signature event of the Black Student Union, is an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and friends to enjoy good quality food, fun, entertainment, and fellowship. There will be free shuttle busses every 15 minutes from Patrick Gym to Burlington High School starting 1 hour before the game, and for 1 hour after. Featuring UVM’s student a cappella singing groups: the Top Cats, the Cat’s Meow, and the Hit Paws. Tickets $5 for students and faculty, $10 for others. Pre-purchase is encouraged. Remaining tickets will be sold at the door beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Join UVM Hillel and President Fogel for brunch, conversation and a silent auction. Special guest is Larry Baras, UVM parent and founder of the new professional Israel Baseball League. Featuring Richard Sugarman, Professor of Religion, presenting "On the Ethics of Generational Responsibility." What kind of responsibility does one generation have for the next? Given the fact that we come to be and pass away, why do, or should we care about posterity? We will explore some of the moral underpinnings of these issues. More precisely, how does the other person's future affect my sense of the present? And in what sense am I responsible for the past of others who come before me? What is it that we can hope for, especially in a time of historical crisis?
