The University of Vermont expects a record turnout for its annual Homecoming and Family Weekend, Thursday-Sunday, October 4-7, 2007. About 3,000 alumni, parents, and family members will participate in a variety of events happening on campus and around the greater Burlington area over the course of the weekend.
Except as noted below, a $30 per family registration fee covers admission to most of the weekend's events and includes a button that entitles the wearer to special discounts and giveaways at various locations in and around Burlington, admission to open classes on Thursday and Friday, and complimentary admission to the Fleming Museum all weekend.

Featured Event
• Dudley H. Davis Center Dedication—Friday, October 5, 3:00-3:30
p.m., Davis Center Oval (Rain site - Olin Atrium in the Davis Center)
The entire UVM and surrounding communities are invited to attend the
ceremonial opening of the Dudley H. Davis Center, the spectacular new
"front door" to campus. Named for the late Dudley H. Davis '43, a towering
figure in the Vermont business community, the Davis Center is the
realization of a longstanding need for a gathering place for the UVM
community.
All Weekend
• Visit the brand new Growing Vermont student-operated Vermont products store on the first floor of the Dudley H. Davis Center, a not-for-profit, one-of-a-kind retail shop dedicated to showcasing Vermont businesses and their products on campus, educating consumers about the benefits of buying local, and providing experiential learning opportunities for UVM’s aspiring entrepreneurs. Open Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Robert Hull Fleming Museum
The Fleming Museum presents Material Pursuits, a major exhibition exploring
how contemporary American artists are using methods, materials, and
strategies usually associated with craft to create large-format artwork
with a conceptual perspective. The exhibition features an array of media
and working methods, including paper, pipe cleaners, Sculpey, mosaics,
crocheting, quilting, embroidery, and flocking. In the Wolcott Gallery is
an exhibition of 19th- and early 20th-century travel photography from the
Museum's collection. In the Wilbur Room is Shoes!, a selection of footwear
from a range of world cultures drawn from the Fleming Museum's costume

Bailey/Howe Library is hosting an exhibition on the history of science
instruction and research using photographs, historic documents, and
artifacts from Special Collections, the University Archives, and other

-Alex Stewart, Associate Professor of Music and author of Making the
Scene: Contemporary New York City Big Band Jazz, an in-depth look at
big band jazz in contemporary New York City (noon-1:00 p.m.).
-Amy Huntington, Vermont illustrator and author of whimsical,
country-themed picture books for children (noon-1:00 p.m.).
-Sylvia Parker, Senior lecturer of music. An active performing pianist who

of popular search tools such as Google. A member of the Bailey/Howe
Library’s professional reference team will demonstrate tricks of the

topics for investigation.

Following the Davis Center Dedication, a time capsule that marks what it is

• Lake Champlain Cruise—4:00 –5:30 p.m.
Take a scenic cruise aboard the Spirit of Ethan Allen III and learn a
little more about the “greatest” lake. Tickets are required ($10 per
person) and are non-refundable. A limited number of tickets may be
available for purchase at Registration. Cruise leaves from the boathouse at
the foot of College Street. Sponsored by the UVM Parents Council.
• 2nd Annual "Finding Unity In Our Diversity” Reception—4:00-6:00

Discover the history of UVM through a different perspective. Learn about
the people and events that have contributed to our campus community. Event
features the premiere of the newest panel additions to the "Remembering Our
Past, Envisioning Our Future" project. Established in 2006, this project
highlights ALANA and LGBTQA members and events from throughout history that
have enhanced the discourse around diversity at UVM. Refreshments will be

• The UVM Lane Series presents Fred Hersch—7:30 p.m., UVM Recital
Hall
Highly-acclaimed pianist and composer Fred Hersch has been widely
recognized for his ability to reinvent the jazz piano repertoire. He has
recorded more than two dozen albums as a solo artist standard jazz
repertoire, infusing classics with his keen insight and extraordinary
techniques. Nominated for Grammys for Best Instrumental Composition as well
as for bandleader, he also was awarded a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship for
composition in 2006 and a Rockefeller Fellowship for a composition

Featuring Richard Sugarman, Professor of Religion, presenting "On the
Ethics of Generational Responsibility." What kind of responsibility does
one generation have for the next? Given the fact that we come to be and
pass away, why do, or should we care about posterity? We will explore some
of the moral underpinnings of these issues. More precisely, how does the
other person's future affect my sense of the present? And in what sense am
I responsible for the past of others who come before me? What is it that we
can hope for, especially in a time of historical crisis?
