Malian singer-songwriter Fatoumata Diawara (aka Fatou) has been a celebrated film actress in France, a political activist who works on issues related to women and artistic freedom, and, of course, a spectacular singer/dancer/performer who can whip an audience into a joyous celebration. Accompanied by a smoking live band, Fatou spins jazz and funk into an exquisitely spare yet sensual folk-rock, inflecting it with the rhythms and melodies of her native Wassoulou tradition. Her radiant voice and coolly infectious Afro-pop style mix the vibrant and the understated, combining themes about love, politics, and empowerment--especially poignant given the current turmoil facing musicians in Mali. Fatou "combines feminist social conscience with effortless melodic charm" (Financial Times).

Price: $40/$32/$25 adult - $36/$28/$21 student
