Living with Strange Loops

Sep 25, 2013
5:30 pm to 6:30 pm
Lafayette Hall L408

Strange loops as a metaphor for Being has been explored by Douglas Hofstadter, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Godel, Escher, Bach (1979). In May of this year his mysterious butterfly fractal was confirmed as a physical phenomena manifesting in a solid-state (physics) system.

In this guided discussion forum, which will meet seven times during the semester, the goal is to respect and build on the connections between fundamental experiences of Being and Big Questions related to being part of complex systems. In academia, this territory relates to a wide range of topics, from systems theory and metaphysical philosophy to philosophy of mind and questions of origins of beauty, order, and knowledge itself. Everyone is welcome; you need not attend all of the sessions to be present at one.
