Vermont Wind Ensemble Concert

Nov 3, 2013
3:00 pm to 4:30 pm
Music Bldg A200 (Recital Hall)

The Vermont Wind Ensemble takes the audience on a musical adventure to exotic places with a program entitled "Myths and Legends".

The concert opens with Sousa's tribute to the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (now referred to as the Shriners), with his "Nobles of the Mystic Shrine." Sousa combines this fraternal organization's sense of fun and fellowship with mystical and Turkish elements in one of his most unusual and colorful marches.

Next is a romp through the Old West with John Williams' Overture to "The Cowboys," followed by Alfred Reed's wonderfully evocative "A Northern Legend," which takes us to the calm and cool northern woods of the the United States.

The concert closes with Johann de Meij's epic Symphony No. 1, "The Lord of the Rings." Based on characters and places from Tolkien's novel, this original work for symphonic band visits the mythical world of Gandalf, Lothlorien, Gollum, the mines of Moria, and the Hobbits.

Price: Free and open to the public.
Sponsor: Music & Dance
