Gund Tea - Paul Bierman: Greenland and Its Ice Sheet - Why Understanding Cold-Region Processes Over Deep Time Matters

Nov 10, 2017
12:00 pm to 1:00 pm
Johnson House 101

The Greenland Ice Sheet, thousands of kilometers away from the world's populace, holds enough water to raise world sea levels by an average of 7 meters. As carbon emissions continue and the climate warms further, more of the ice sheet will melt, pouring water into the global oceans. Only by understanding how the coupled Earth, atmosphere, ocean and biotic system functioned in the past can we hope to understand how it will respond in the future. In this talk I will review what my students and I have learned over the past 25 years about Earth's response to past climate changes in the arctic and elsewhere. I will place our work in a broader context of the whole Earth response to past climate changes which sets the context for the next decades, centuries, and millennia.
