Elevator Modernization

The UVM Physical Plant is responsible for the operation and maintnence of over 90 passenger and freight elevators on campus as well as 15 chair lifts. These elevators are subjected to annual inspections based on State regulations, as well as a preventative maintenance program. The preventive maintenance program has been successful in bringing down the number of failures while bolstering the general repair of the elevators.

In 2004, the State of Vermont adopted the ASME Standards for Elevator Inspection and created the Vermont Elevator Safety Review Board. Since that time, Physical Plant has modernized over 50% of the elevators on campus. Changes in technology coupled with the age of the campus has made this a major challenge and initiative.
