PPD Staff Receive Award from National Guard

Rick Weld, Utilities Zone Manager, and Shannon Cavanaugh, Utilities Supervisor, were recently recognized as a Patriotic Employer by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve program.

The two were nominated for the award by Bryan Lumsden, Operating Engineer at the Central Heating and Cooling Plant. Lumsden is currently on a leave of absence from UVM while serving in the Army National Guard.

The award was presented by representatives of the DOD's Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) program and by Lumsden, who came to campus for a visit. The award states that as a Patriotic Employer, the recipient is "contributing to national security and protecting liberty and freedom by supporting employee participation in America's national guard and reserve force".

DOD representatives highlighed the importance of civilian employers, such as UVM Physical Plant, in supporting the overall well-being of service members by allowing extended time away from their regular employment.
