The University of Vermont

Integrated Humanities Program

Here are some comments from a few IHP current students and alumni:

The IHP is an excellent first-year program for students who desire a more intimate environment in a larger university setting. The professors are beyond unique. Ashley Orenberg, class of 2006.

Being in the Integrated Humanities Program was the catalyst for my ensuing successes at UVM and after graduation. Arriving from a small French village, I was at first intimidated by college life and cultural differences. The IHP's small classes and approachable professors offer a comforting yet challenging introduction to UVM. Regardless of one's major, studying the canon of great books is essential to everyone. I accepted an internship at the European Parliament my Junior year and realized how much of the literature I had read in IHP was beneficial to my understanding of European history, and political and philosophical thought. I developed confidence and a detail-oriented, analytical approach to my studies. I am currently working in
Washington, DC for the National Young Leaders Conference, which enables high school students to develop leadership skills through a direct contact with the political arena. I have also applied to Graduate School to study International Affairs. I am proud and honored to have participated in the IHP and consider it one of the most important building blocks of my academic and professional careers.  Lisa Obrentz, class of '02.

The IHP gave me an exciting, coherent background in Western Civilization. This background has complimented almost every class I have since taken at UVM.  Elena Ratushewitz, class of '99.

Signing up for the IHP was the smartest thing I ever did at UVM. I got to be in small classes, taught be great professors with whom I developed lasting relationships.  Steven Shaw, Attorney.

As a first-year student, I was so confused about what classes to take and where to live. The IHP made all of those decisions much easier. I lived in a great dorm with people who are still my best friends and I met some professors whom I really liked.  Ellen Shapiro, editor, Simon & Schuster.

The best thing about the IHP is that each class relates to every other. So many books have historical, literary, and philosophical components to them. In the IHP, we discuss each aspect of a book in the different classes.  Dawn Baird, English Prof, Japan.
