INTRODUCTION TO THE HESA PRACTICUM COURSES

HESA graduationDescription:

Practica are opportunities for HESA students to explore functional areas of higher education and student affairs. These practice experiences are opportunities for students to integrate theory and practice; identify, enhance, and/or develop skills, knowledge and abilities; and find a unique path to success.

During these practicum internships, 9 hours per week are dedicated to a higher education or student affairs administrative office. Students negotiate a project(s) or set of responsibilities to be completed within the time frame of the semester-long practicum.

Objectives:

•    Develop and use a professional and ethical orientation to practice;

•    Develop skills and appreciation for applying theories and research to understand and improve performance;

•    Use observation, action, and reflection to build relevant competencies in higher education and student affairs settings;

•    Explore the various cultures and functions of student affairs and higher education;

•    Work in a teaching-learning environment where supervisors with knowledge about student affairs and higher education promote your understanding of the functions, responsibilities, and relationships of the unit;

•    Interact with supervisors to learn the standards for professional, high quality work;

•    Gain an appreciation for the institutional and external contexts in which practice is conducted;

•    Foster professional, collegial relationships.

•    Gain an in-depth understanding of one area of student affairs work and share that understanding with others in the class.
