Laws and Regulations
The University of Vermont Consulting Archaeology Program (UVM CAP) assists state and federal agencies, communities and private developers in addressing their obligations with respect to archaeological resources, as required by state and federal laws and regulations. These include the National Historic Preservation Act, as amended (16 USC 470); the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (42 USC 4321-4347); the Archaeological and Historic Preservation Act of 1974 (16 USC 469); Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation Act of 1966 (49 USC 303); the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation’s Protection of Historic Properties (36 CFR Part 800); the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation (48 FR 44716-44740); Guidelines for Federal Agency Responsibilities under Section 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act (53 FR 4727-4746); Vermont’s Act 250 (22 VSA chapter 14); and the Vermont Guidelines for Archeological Studies.
