Tackling Bias and Discrimination in the Clinical and Academic Environment

This workshop will be a roundtable discussion that will focus on bias and discrimination as it pertains to students in the clinical setting and healthcare providers in the workplace. Various scenarios will be provided for discussion related to actual events that have taken place. The focus of the workshop will address how to identify bias and discrimination whether it be a subtle or overt experience. The content will translate to other disciplines and students placements in clinical internships, externships, or field experiences. The goals of the presentation are the identification of bias and discriminatory actions/behaviors, exploring ways to facilitate the communication of emotions and thoughts aassociated with experiencing or observing bias/discrimination, and to discuss coping strategies for students/employees. Attendees will be asked to develop creative corrective actions, coping, and management strategies to help build a foundation for the safe reporting of bias/discrimination for the student in a learning environment and for the employee in a workplace environment.
