Policy on sharing class materials

Sharing your notes with other students in the class during the semester is fine, as long as you do not charge for them. Students are NOT allowed to sell notes to other students, online or otherwise, and are not allowed to upload their notes to open websites. This means you can not upload your notes to sites like notehall.com or sharenotes.com.

This is consistent with UVM’s and the Sociology Department’s policies (see below). I do this because 1) the final word on course content needs to be under the control of the instructor, 2) participating in lectures and taking your own notes are an important part of the learning process, and 3) Universities are non-profit institutions, devoted to disciplined free inquiry and the dissemination of the knowledge that results. We don’t make things to sell them.

The Sociology Department policy on class materials:

"Consistent with the University's policy on intellectual property rights, it is the Sociology department's policy that teaching and curricular materials (including but not limited to classroom lectures, class notes, exams, handouts, and presentations) are the property of the instructor. Therefore, electronic recording and/or transmission of classes or class notes is prohibited without the express written permission of the instructor. Such permission is to be considered unique to the needs of an individual student (e.g. ADA compliance), and not a license for permanent retention or electronic dissemination to others."
