Our mission is to help educate, prepare and engage individuals in careers that have an impact on the everyday lives of Americans. The transportation industry provides an opportunity for you to help build sustainable communities and tackle issues such as climate change, energy use and safety. We invite you to explore the transportation industry in the federal, state, local or private sector - and to be part of a groundbreaking effort to improve mobility for Americans and move our economy forward.
Our Workforce Development Programs
Nationally, 40 - 50% of the current transportation workforce is expected to retire in the next decade. In Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, a similar trend is occurring. Fewer workers are gravitating to the field and there is intense competition from other industries for qualified workers at all levels. The University of Vermont Transportation Research Center and its partners in the Transportation Education Development Pilot Project (TEDPP) are working to address these key challenges through four demonstration programs. The pilot program was initiated in 2008 with a U.S. Department of Transportation million-dollar award to the UVM TRC. The workforce pilot initiative is in its final year, undergoing a developmental evaluation and planning for new regional initiatives.
The UVM TRC was part of the leadership team that hosted the National Transportation Workforce Summit in April 2012 and organized the 2013 TRB session "After the National Transportation Workforce Summit: Answering the Call for Action." The final report on the summit is the Framework for Action.
UVM also hosts the Vermont National Summer Transportation Institute, a two week residential program for high school students in partnership with the Vermont Agency of Transportation. This hands-on program introduces students to transportation careers in aviation, highway, maritime and transit through engineering, project management and operations.
