In spring 2009, the TRC prepared two research reports addressing the future of funding transportation in rural areas: a dilemma marked by increased costs and decreased funds. As Americans switch to more fuel-efficient vehicles and turn to alternative fuels or non-motorized modes, the state and federal transportation funding mechanisms, which are primarily dependent on gas and diesel taxes, are becoming increasingly inefficient.

• Results of the Vermont Rural Transportation Funding Summit: This report summarizes the events and results of that summit, which was held on December 8, 2008 in Burlington, Vermont.
• Future Surface Transportation Financing Options: Challenges and Opportunities for Rural States: A joint effort by the Snelling Center for Government and the TRC, the report provides a national and international review of current and proposed funding practices.
