2009 UVM Transportation Center – Student of the Year

UVM Transportation Center Nominations due November 6, 2009

One student from each of the University Transportation Centers throughout the United States will be recognized at the January 2010 Transportation Research Board Meeting in Washington DC as the winner of the UTC 2009 Student of the Year Award. Each student will receive a plaque from the USDOT that will be presented by the RSPA Administrator. In addition, each of the UTCs will award a $1,000 prize to the student selected by their Center plus the travel costs of attendance at the 89th Annual TRB Meeting.

UVM Transportation Center Eligibility

  1. Graduate students in any College who are US citizens or permanent residents and who have been enrolled for at least one semester at UVM since August 2008. Individuals may have already graduated if they meet other selection criteria.
  2. Eligible candidates must have completed with a grade of B or better at least twelve hours of graduate coursework at the time the selection is made, and have a graduate GPA in excess of 3.25 (out of 4.00).
  3. Graduate students must have completed or be completing a thesis or degree in a topic of transportation related to the UTC theme, Sustainable Systems and Advanced Technologies for Northern Communities.

Selection Criteria

Selection will be based upon accomplishments in three areas:

  1. Research merit
  2. Academic performance
  3. Professionalism and leadership

Evidence of research merit is based upon evaluation of a paper, thesis or report. Academic performance is based on GPA. Evidence of professionalism and leadership is judged by evidence of presentations at professional society meetings and symposia, and leadership in student associations.

UVM faculty may nominate their outstanding students by submitting the following to the UTC by November 6, 2009. A committee of 3 UVM faculty (who do not have students under consideration) will judge nominations.

The faculty member should submit the following nomination package preferably by email to Dr. Richard Watts by Nov. 6:

  1. Nomination letter; (from at least one faculty member)
  2. Academic transcript and short vita; and
  3. A copy of one paper, a thesis abstract or a report written by the nominee.
