APLE: DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE Academic Programs for Learning and Engagement As a department that combines both academic and technical training in the art of theatre, the Department of Theatre includes unusual programs for training in its academic outreach. Study abroad, internships at professional theatres, access to state and national auditions, and contact in production and through workshops with guest professionals in the field are just a few of the out of class sources available to theatre students. In addition, research opportunities and private professional training may be undertaken in independent studies in which students work one on one with professors. Study Abroad: Eurotheatre: Every two years the theatre students are invited to participate in a two week study abroad program in the summer which includes intensive study with theatre companies or at universities combining theory and history with performance attendance. Programs have been conducted at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, the Shakespeare Centre, Stratford-upon-Avon, England, and the Friches Théâtre Urbain, Paris, France. Faculty accompany the students on these academic adventures. Auditions for Summer Stock and Touring Companies Performance faculty coach and design faculty help students prepare portfolios for auditions and interviews at NETC (New England Theatre Conference) and VATTA where theatre professionals cast and hire prospective actors, stage managers, designers and technical staff. URTA: University Resident Theatre Association The department invites guest artists to participate in department productions as directors, stage managers, designers, and actors. The students are coached by these professionals and workshops are provided in specific areas of the theatrical art. Often connections after graduation result from these initial contacts. Internships: Theatre by the Sea, Vermont Stage Company, and St. AMichael's Theatre Company Students are invited to work as interns in technical theatre and stage management at professional theatres in Rhode Island, and Burlington, Vermont, as well as other parts of New England. They also may submit proposals for honors research within the rubric of the university honors college for which they write a senior thesis of substantial academic content. Professional Training To prepare portfolios and professional auditions, students may work one on one with faculty in intensive training and may find themselves assisting a designer/professor in national venues. In the process, students are taught the business of theatre as well as the art.
