Our Approach at UVM

Catamount paw We have taken a unique integrative approach to incorporating systems thinking into our curricula that focuses not only on what we teach, but how we teach. The main aspects include:

  1. Modifying three existing courses into three required systems courses
  2. Integrating systems thinking into core courses throughout the program, starting in the first year
  3. Incorporating service-learning through local catamount communities into key courses (at least one per year) as a means to "practice" the systems approach
  4. Making pedagogical changes including team teaching, using case studies and service-learning group projects

The catamount paw shown above is a visual representation of curricular changes including other aspects addressed in our reform such as IT, inquiry-based learning and "soft" skills (e.g., teamwork, communication).
