Seminar Description:

Over the past decade, many businesses have applied the principles of environmental sustainability and social responsibility. They've managed to "do the right thing" for the planet and for people and still remain highly profitable.

The question is: How?

In our five-day, intensive summer program, you'll explore the principles of sustainable venturing and marketing. But even more importantly, you'll apply what you've learned.

Are you a business leader seeking to build and manage a values-driven organization — and still make a profit? Or are you a student interested in pursuing a career at such a workplace?

By offering both academic credit and professional development enrollment options, our program is designed to meet your needs. You'll learn about the principles and best practices that allow successful businesses to achieve sustainability.

Benefits:

Depending on which schedule you choose, you'll integrate theory into practice by:

  • Working on case studies involving projects under way at Ben & Jerry's and other leading socially responsible businesses. You'll hear from business leaders about how the company's values are infused into its final products. Then you'll work in a small project team to develop a plan for the business, reporting back to the company's representatives and other class participants.
  • Meeting others who are committed to applying state-of-the-art knowledge to their organizations and businesses.
  • Participating in stimulating class discussions about innovative ways to develop and market products, foster leadership in a values-driven culture, assess a company's environmental performance and communicate with potential investors and key stakeholders.
  • Considering how your own business might benefit from the theories and best practices you've learned during the week from academic experts and business leaders from highly successful organizations, such as Seventh Generation, Ben & Jerry's and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters.

Who should attend:

  • People at all levels of an organization who are interested in doing business in a socially and environmentally responsible way.
  • Graduate and upper-level undergraduate students interested in working for or starting sustainable businesses.

Format:

Learn from recognized leaders in business and academia using an interdisciplinary approach. Our five days of seminars allow you to interact with Seventh Generation, Ben & Jerry's, Green Mountain Coffee, and other sustainable business representatives; meet other individuals who are committed to applying state-of-the-art knowledge in their organizations and businesses; and work in teams on "living case studies" — two projects actually being implemented at leading sustainable businesses.
