Special Summer Courses/Programs

Credit Course List

Over 400 courses and programs to choose from to catch up or get ahead! Pick up as much as a semester's worth of credits in just three months, or three credits in just four weeks. May Session and two summer sessions allow students to remain in Burlington and take classes on campus, return home and study online, or tour the world beyond UVM in a travel-study program led by key UVM faculty.

Online Courses

Over 50 summer courses are available online, allowing students to access their course and study from wherever they are this summer - in Burlington, at the beach or even on the couch. Taking a UVM online course saves time and hassle by avoiding the transfer credit process entirely and ensures that the credit will apply to your degree.

Travel Courses - Faculty Led

Studying English literature with one of UVM's renowned scholars is one thing. But doing so in London, where the novels are set, is an experience you won't ever forget. This summer, our faculty are teaching a variety of subjects in numerous exciting destinations: England, China, Nicaragua, Ghana, South Africa, Finland, and Costa Rica. If you've ever traveled outside the U.S., then you know you will learn more than usual in a three-credit course.

UVM: A Summer Science Destination

Ranked as one of the premier research institutions in the country, the University offers world-class science programs and over 85 summer science courses. Many students choose summer as the best time to take a difficult science course. By focusing more intensely on just one class, paired with the attention of an instructor teaching a smaller class, you can more manageably master the course content in the shorter summer semester format. Students can choose from diverse courses:

  • Medical physiology, pharmacology, anatomy and neuroscience;
  • Health science, complementary health, nutrition, and personal wellness;
  • Physical, chemistry, biology and diverse environmental sciences.

Institute for Global Sustainability

Vermont and UVM continue to get top national rankings for being "green" - a valuable reputation to have today. At the Institute for Global Sustainability, you can be a part of this. Building upon Vermont's leadership, this new summer institute will prepare global problem solvers to help redesign our world through a multitude of courses (offered both on-campus and online) and stimulating events and activities. You will love summer in Vermont - our laboratory of best practices -- where you'll be surrounded by noted innovators, come to better understand the issues we face today, and find your inspiration!

Business Savvy: The Business of Life

Thinking beyond college and wondering whether you will find a job? Did you recently graduate and are still honing your career search? To that end, we offer an intense Business Savvy program for any UVM student who has completed their sophomore year and is not enrolled in business (business minors can apply). Students learn independence for personal financial management, entrepreneurial spirit from a complex business simulation and how to succeed in the professional world no matter their degree.

Vtrim Online for Undergrads

Vtrim for Undergrads is a one-credit course based on the University's behavioral weight management research with proven results. This online course is open to all undergraduate students who want not only to lose weight, but to begin living a healthier, more active lifestyle. Students meet online once a week via a chat room, journal daily calorie intake plus exercise and gain support from a group of peers.

World Debate Institute

Each year, our popular World Debate Institute teaches hundreds of high school and college students an important life skill: how to communicate in a meaningful way. Students can learn how to research a topic, express an argument and convince others - or even meet them halfway. The World Debate Institute has drawn the attention of The New York Times, which called it "boot camp for the brain and for free speech as well."
